The Innovation Institute Appoints Michelle Van Gheem as Executive Director for Enterprise Development in Collaboration with Bon Secours Health System

Van Gheem as executive director for Enterprise Development for its member owner Bon Secours Health System, a $3.6 billion not-for-profit Catholic health system sponsored by Bon Secours Ministries, and headquartered in Marriottsville, Maryland.

Van Gheem will be primarily responsible for day-to-day operations involved with cultivating and developing medical product ideas submitted to The Institute’s Innovation Lab by the physicians and employees of Bon Secours. She will also represent The Innovation Institute’s other subsidiary companies as needed.

Van Gheem comes to The Innovation Institute with more than 17 years of progressive research compliance experience, including negotiation of research and intellectual property agreements, and providing oversight for federally regulated committees. Van Gheem’s expertise also includes building department infrastructure and implementing research billing processes.

“Michelle’s strength in research and compliance will help accelerate the commercialization process of new medical products ideas for Bon Secours,”said Larry Stofko, executive director of The Innovation Institute.

Van Gheem most recently served as director of research compliance at the State University of New York at Buffalo where she had oversight of human research, intellectual and creative activity; export controls, and financial conflicts of interest. Previous to that, Michelle served as global research compliance manager at GE Healthcare, General Electric Co. in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, where she was responsible for global research and commercial compliance oversight for its $12 billion medical device business.

Prior to her work at GE, Van Gheem held appointments at Covenant Healthcare System, Inc., in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as regional director of research management, and at Marquette University, also in Milwaukee, as director of the Office of Research Compliance.

Van Gheem received her Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is completing a Masters of Jurisprudence in Health Law at Loyola University Chicago Law School.

Van Gheem will be working out of the Bon Secours Richmond Health System offices in Glen Allen, Virginia, and Marriottsville, Maryland.
