Healthcare Design & Construction Hosts Tour of Innovation Lab Site in Newport Beach
Shares With Female Students About Opportunities in Construction for Women
June 26, 2014 — Orange County, Calif. – On June 25, Healthcare Design & Construction (HDC), LLC, in collaboration with the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), hosted a tour of the new Innovation Lab site in Newport Beach for a group of 39 female high school students from Orange County high schools.
Janice Ramsay-Gonzales, operations manager for HDC and member of NAWIC, is coordinating the tour. She said, “This field trip is part of a week-long day camp held on the campus of Katella High School in Anaheim to introduce these young ladies to the opportunities in engineering, architecture, management, and the construction trades.”
The 12,000 square foot Innovation Lab space has been designed to accommodate both small and large groups as they strive to take new healthcare inventions to market. It includes a Project Development area, a Simulation Lab, Small and Large Group Collaboration areas, an Ideation and Deep Dive work space, and an Exhibit space. Lab completion is scheduled for September 2014.
Funds have been raised from construction companies like HDC to cover the costs involved with the day camp. Therefore, these students will be able to attend free of charge. Additional support has been provided by Innovation Lab subcontractors Mammoth Electric, Inc.; Meyer and Reeder, Inc.; and B & B Plumbing, Inc. Other major donors include Clark Construction Group, United Rentals, GMU Geotechnical, American Concrete Institute, and Valley Crest Landscape Companies.
Ramsay-Gonzales says she was given her first opportunity to work in construction as an apprentice cabinet maker as a summer job for a residential general contractor. That led to jobs as a contract administrator, superintendent, and her current position as an operations manager. In this role, she oversees the administrative side of construction. She says that what she enjoys most about this role is watching the construction transformation process and seeing the finished product.
The National Association of Women provides its members with opportunities for professional development, education, networking, leadership training, public service and more. Its core purpose is to enhance the success of women in the construction industry.
